rftlJewish Community Centre of Krakow Launches Inaugural Ride for the Living – 50-Mile Fundraising Bicycle Ride from Auschwitz to the JCC.

Krakow, Poland, May 9, 2014 – In late 2013, Jewish Community Centre of Krakow (JCC Krakow) member Robert Desmond rode his bicycle 1,350 miles along the WWII path of liberation from London to Auschwitz. On Friday, June 6, 2014 JCC Krakow members, staff, and friends from around the world will be joining Robert on a ride from Auschwitz to JCC Krakow in the inaugural Ride for the Living!

Ride for the Living will be an annual event under the patronage of Chief Rabbi of Poland, Michael Schudrich. The nearly 50-mile bicycle ride will be a trip to not just remember the Jewish history, but to celebrate the Jewish life that exists today in Poland. Participants will join the Jewish community of Krakow for Shabbat dinner on Friday, June 6 and participate in the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee’s (JDC's) 7@Nite Festival on Saturday, June 7. Among other things, participants will be raising money for JCC Krakow to fund a trip for Holocaust survivors to visit Israel.

"I think a lot of us, members of the Polish Jewish community feels that the March of the Living, while serving an important educational purpose, is incomplete. That it too often ignores the great renewal of Jewish life here," says Jonathan Ornstein, Executive Director of JCC Krakow. "The Ride for the Living will bring together people from around the world to celebrate Jewish life in Poland.”

"The Ride for the Living is important because Jewish life in Poland is flourishing. Jewish communities around Poland are growing and while we acknowledge our loss as a people here, we can’t focus only on the loss," said Rabbi Schudrich.
